amendments, corrections and updates to quizzes:
The following corrections or changes have been made (most recent first).
We do our best to check our facts but occasionally even supposedly reliable sources are not so reliable, and in other instances answers are open to confusion or dispute, in which case I am very grateful to everyone who sends corrections and suggestions. This helps us to ensure that the quizzes are as robust and accurate as possible. Thank you.
quizballs 60 - question 18 was clarified because there are at least two other rivers in Manchester aside from the answer - thanks D Higgins - 16 Apr 2009.
quizballs 25 - question 22 was corrected from 'autobiography' to 'biography' - thanks Dave aka Rock Me - 31 Mar 2009.
quizballs 3 - question 7 - the album Bookends was released in 1968, not 1982, as previously and ridiculously stated (the year wasn't the answer, just additional info) - thanks J Tait - 18 Feb 2009.
quizballs 59 - questions 91, 98 (spellings/typos - Telly Savalas; Dickens'; Micawber) and answer 56 (spelling - Prima Facie) were corrected - thanks G Heyes - 11 Feb 2009.
quizballs 59 - question 41 was corrected from 1986 to 1979 - thanks S Curtis - 4 Feb 2009.
quizballs 23 - question 25 spelling typo corrected (Diana instead of incorrect Dianna) - thanks B Budd - 31 Dec 2008.
quizballs 37 - question 23 was corrected (from 'What was Doris Day's only UK No1 hit record?') to 'What was Doris Day's first UK No1 hit single?' because she had two UK number one singles, the second being 'Whatever Will Be, Will Be' (Que Sera, Sera) in 1956 - thanks E Breare - 29 Dec 2008.
quizballs 47 - question 13 (Who was America named after? Amerigo Vespucci [Italian explorer, 1454-1512]) was replaced due to recently emerged competing theory that Welsh born merchant Richard Amerike was instead responsible for America's name - thanks A Mercer - 24 Dec 2008.
quizballs 48 - question 22 was changed (In which body of water is Christmas Island?) because there is more than one island of this name - thanks W Armstrong - 19 Dec 2008.
quizballs 57 - question 28 was amended to King of the Scots (from King of Scotland) - thanks C Sinclair and J Anderson - 19 Dec 2008.
quizballs 3 - question 36 (What is the lowest point in Europe?) was replaced because the answer (The Caspian Sea) can be regarded as being outside of Europe - thanks A Cliff - 16 Dec 2008.
quizballs 48 - question 27 - the typo in the answer's supporting detail was corrected to show 1823, not 1923, being the year that the poem 'Twas the night Before Christmas was first published - thanks D Froats - 15 Dec 2008
quizballs 37 - question 28 - the spelling of Sydney was corrected (from the incorrect Sidney [Harbour Bridge]) - thanks D Blake - 13 Dec 2008
quizballs 6 - question 27 was corrected to state '...by a Steffi Graf fan...' replacing the erroneous '...while playing Steffi Graf...' The match in question was against Magadelana Maleeva - thanks J Anker - 5 Dec 2008
quizballs 41 - the supporting detail for the answer to question 4 was corrected to Sene (from Seme), being the 100 units of the Tala currency - thanks S Tuimalatu - 16 Oct 2008.
quizballs 55 - question 3 was clarified to refer to the 'first Mersey road tunnel' (instead of the 'Mersey Tunnel') since there are two road tunnels and a rail tunnel under the river Mersey, at the last count... thanks C White - 14 Oct 2008
quizballs 56 - the typo in the supporting information for the answer to question 90 was corrected to show that Caxton printed Canterbury Tales in 1476, not 1976... thanks R Kershaw - 2 Sep 2008
quizballs 26 - question 31 was clarified to refer to whole plant (leaves or roots) rather than roots (implication of roots only) of the cassava plant - question also clarified that the production of the poisonous substance can be triggered by eating the raw plant, rather than the poison occurring in the plant - thanks L Ashley - 28 Aug 2008.
quizballs 42 - question 51 - answer corrected to Lord Speaker (from Lord Chancellor). The Woolsack was the seat of the Lord Chancellor until 2006, when due to the creation of two separate roles (Lord Chancellor previously covered the Speaker role) it became the seat of the Lord Speaker - thanks C White - 23 Aug 2008.
quizballs 51 - question 55 was amended to 'Canadian-born' from 'American' (Paul Anka later became naturalised American) - thanks B Cork - 29 Jul 2008.

quizballs 11 - question 3 - the spelling of the answer was corrected from Patous to Patou - thanks C White - 6 Jun 2008.
quizballs 51 - question 43 - backing band spelling corrected from 'Brothers' to 'Bruvvers' - 28 May 2008.
quizballs 25 - question 8 - spelling (Virginia 'Wolf') corrected to Woolf - thanks K Riding - 15 May 2008.
quizballs 11 - question 27 - Bakewell tarts are technically known as Bakewell puddings - thanks K Riding - 14 May 2008.
quizballs 1 - question 29 - previously 'The Yeomen of the Guard are known by what other name?' was reworded to refer instead to 'Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London'. In actual fact the Tower of London's Yeoman Warders are part of the Yeoman of the Guard, which form a wider Royal Bodyguard. All Beefeaters are members of The Yeomen of the Guard, but not all Yeoman of the Guard are Beefeaters (Yeoman Warders) at the Tower of London - thanks Carol - 9 May 2008.
quizballs 51 - question 19 was amended from 'Bill Haley's ... what' to 'Bill Haley and his ... what' - thanks A Cooper - 12 Apr 2008.
quizballs 51 - answer to question 8 - spelling corrected to Miles Davis (not Davies), thanks Jason for saving me further embarrassment on this one.. 4 Apr 2008.
quizballs 15 and quizballs 23 - spellings corrected respectively for campanile (not camponile - it's a bell tower) and Andy Capp's surname (not Cap) - thanks to D Albury's eagle eye again - 10 Mar 2008. Also hansom cab (not hansen) in quizballs 26 - 14 Mar 2008.
quizballs 50 - the answer to question 60 was corrected from eight to nine due to my daft omission of Sunderland among the list of foreign-owned Premiership Soccer clubs - thanks R Moran - 3 Mar 2008.
quizballs 6 - question 49 was altered because it was based, wrongly, on the notion that the Verdi opera was written to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal; it was not - thanks Bob - 14 Feb 2008.
quizballs 2 - question 5 was replaced because more than one artist used the title The Absinthe Drinker for a painting - thanks D Albury - 3 Feb 2008.
quizballs 3 - question 45 (coldest planet - Pluto) was replaced because Pluto is no longer classed as a planet - thanks S Tapsell - 25 Jan 2008.
quizballs 42 - typos corrected in answer to question 51 - thanks R Marland - 18 Dec 2007.
quizballs 16 - question 18 was replaced due to complexity and variations (the European ruling Habsberg family ruled at various times a lot more than Spain as suggested) of reforming a simple question and answer - question 33 was also clarified - thanks D Albury - 15 Dec 2007.
quizballs 23 - question 33 (Roman Goddess of War - Minerva) and question 37 (Only human body part without blood supply - Cornea) were replaced due to potential for confusion - thanks Duncan - 7 Dec 2007
quizballs 29 - question 11 was clarified because the wording (What were the names of the biblical three wise men?) implied that the three wise men's names were stated in the Bible when in fact they were not - in fact only 'wise men' and the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh are detailed in the bible - see the quiz answer for more detail - thanks A Russell - 6 Dec 2007
quizballs 14 - question 11 (Who was the first actress to win an Oscar and an Emmy in the same year?) was replaced due to inaccuracy (correct answer should be Liza Minelli, not Helen Hunt), although the release dates of the four films involved make the question rather cumbersome and open to debate, hence its replacement - thanks S McCauley - 6 Nov 2007
quizballs 31 - question 1 typo 'tub or lard' corrected to 'tub of lard' - (thanks M Freeman) - 6 Nov 2007

quizballs 18 - question 25 about the film Asphalt Jungle was corrected from 1938 to 1950 - (thanks T Curran) - 25 Oct 2007
quizballs 46 - question 4 answer corrected - thankfully my major clanger was quickly spotted (pun intended) wrongly stating number of balls on a snooker table - not seventeen, of course, twenty-two - (thanks M Ronneback) - 23 Oct 2007
quizballs 1 - question 5 was replaced due to complexity of interpreting and explaining the word 'active' in relation to volcanoes. The question and answer were: What is the name of the world's highest active volcano? Cotopaxi (Ecuador). In fact several other volcanoes, notably Ojos del Salado (last erupted AD400-1000) and Llullaillaco (1877) are higher and 'active' in terms of volcano history. Cotopaxi is often cited as the highest active volcano because it seems to be the highest most recently active volcano (1975 and earlier in 1900s) - 2 Oct 2007 - (thanks I Duffy for drawing attention to this.)
quizballs 4 - question 40 was clarified to be the number of players in an Australian Rules Football team on the field at the same time - 25 Sep 2007 - (ack A Duffy).

quizballs 15 - question 24 was clarified and the supporting detail in the answer extended on 25 Jul 2007 - (thanks J Stone)
quizballs 12 - The supporting details for the answers to question 7, 34 and 45 were extended and corrected on 24 July 2007 - (thanks J Stone)
quizballs 27 - question 9 was clarified because Cher sang the Alfie theme song for the US release and soundtrack - (thanks D Oldham) - 24 Jul 2007
quizballs 25 - questions 17 ('19992' typo) and 29 (Elizabeth Taylor's surname omitted from question) were corrected on 20 Jul 2007 - and the faulty red font changed to black. (Thanks Esmond)
quizballs 41 - question 50 corrected - Farouk was succeeded by Faud II as Egypt's last King - (thanks P Webster) - 10 Jul 2007
quizballs 40 - question 3 corrected - Yuri Andropov's presidency began 1982 not 1983 - (thanks P Webster and A Hurworth) - 10 Jul 2007 - also question 27 - spelling of Solanas corrected. (Thanks C Morrow) - 1 Jul 2007
quizballs 8 - question 26 - The question was reworded due to error, replacing 1991-92 for 1999, and to clarify 1975-76 instead of 1975. (Thanks MnO) - 26 Jun 2007

quizballs 35 - question 13 - The Apollo 13 astronaut Jack Swigert contacted Mission Control with the words, "Houston, we've had a problem here," not Jim Lovell, who, despite common impressions and various historical sources, seems never to have actually said "Houston, we have a problem." (Thanks B Bielstein and T Turner - My first attempted correction was 15 May but I managed even to get wrong the perfectly good correction from B Bielstein and mistakenly insert Jim instead of Jack Swigert, and I thank Tim Turner for pointing this out, in addition to confirming that the other astronaut aside from Jim Lovell was Fred Haise.) - 18 May 2007
quizballs 22 - question 40 - The question 'What type of fruit is a bergamot?' was replaced because it had three different possible answers: pear, citrus or orange. As well as being a pear variety, bergamot arguably more commonly refers the pear-shaped citrus or orange fruit, grown in Italy, a cross between a pear-lemon and Seville orange or grapefruit, used in making Bergamot oil and for flavouring Early Grey tea. The word bergamot is originally from the Turkish begarmud, meaning prince's pear. (Thanks T Compton) - 16 May 2007
quizballs 24 - question 4 - spelling mistake corrected - angle should of course be angel. (Thanks M Brown) - 2 May 2007

quizballs 35 - question 15 was altered due to error, now explained in the answer. (Thanks A Cherry) - 20 April 2007.
quizballs 8 - questions 38 and 45 - spelling of surnames was corrected. (Thanks M Weetch) - 19 Apr 2007
quizballs 13 - question 16 was amended because the previous format relied on the plural 'apples' to produce the 'S' - plus there was a typo in the answer which omitted the 'S', which made it even more confusing, sorry. (Thanks L Anderson) - 18 Apr 2007 - (The question was subsequently replaced altogether on 2 May)
quizballs 16 - question 42 was clarfied to refer to 'tribe of people' instead of simply 'where'. (Thanks M Weetch) - 7 Apr 2007
quizballs 26 - question 2 - answer corrected - Winston Churchill had five not four children. (Thanks J Hill) - 16 Mar 2007
quizballs 20 - question 20 - the question was replaced due to the difficulty in providing a correct unequivocal answer to: What causes Lily Tomlin to shrink in the 1981 film The Incredible Shrinking Woman? The answer was incompletely stated in this quiz as 'perfume', but the full correct answer (various lifestyle and household chemicals and additives) is not well-suited to a quiz. (Thanks Razzle) - 16 Mar 2007
quizballs 15 - question 28 - the spelling of the answer 'scapular' was corrected to 'scapula'. (Thanks M Weetch) - 11 Mar 2007
quizballs 14 - question 33 - Dalmation was corrected to Dalmatia. (Thanks M Weetch) - 11 Mar 2007

quizballs 17 - question 73 - Ray Wilson was the only Everton player in the 1966 World Cup winning team. Alan Ball transferred to Everton (from Blackpool) in August of 1966, after the World Cup. (Ack G Fallon) - 7 Mar 2007
quizballs 19 - question 49 - The Battle of The Somme was in 1916, not 1918 as previously stated. The main answer to the question was correct (First World War) - the error was in the supporting info about the year. (Ack J P Corcoran) - 8 Feb 07
quizballs 17 - question 68 - Alan Ball was a Blackpool (not Everton) player when he won his 1966 World Cup medal. He transferred to Everton in August of 1966. (Ack W Rich) - 22 Jan 2007
quizballs 9 - question 6 - Nick Faldo won the US Masters three times, not twice. (Ack S Smith) - 4 Jan 07

quizballs 28 - question 17 - Ironbridge is near Telford, not part of Telford as previously implied. (Ack N Killick) - 21 Dec 06

quizballs 18 - question 9 was replaced altogether due to the load of rubbish that was there before about Gerry and the Pacemakers having had seven number one singles. They had three. (Ack E Mossop) - 17 Sep 06
quizballs 2 - question 27 - the previous question was replaced altogether due to the complex makings of the film Star Wars, which incidentally was edited in England after filming in various different countries. (Ack G Aitchison) - 16 Sep 06 - Additionally I am informed: 'Star Wars' is now known as 'A New Hope'. The series of films is known as Star Wars. 'A New Hope' was edited in California by Marcia Lucas (George Lucas' then wife) who won an Oscar for it. George Lucas and Marcia have since split up, and George has re-edited the film many times, as he has tinkered with the special effects over the years. (Ack Jim, 16 May 2007)
quizballs 1 - question 28, and quizballs 16 - question 23 - These two questions were replaced by completely new questions due to the complexity of interpreting proximity of planets to Earth. Proximities are always changing because all planets are on their own quite different orbits round the Sun. Incidentally Venus has the closest orbit to that of Earth's orbit. (Ack S Edwards for pointing out the anomalies) - 15 Sep 06
quizballs 2 - question 4 - Re-worded question to resolve ambiguity (the mesosphere is the atmospheric layer above the stratosphere; the atmospheric region above the stratosphere is the ionosphere, which reaches from the stratosphere through the mesosphere into the thermosphere - ack C Eshman) - 13 Sep 06
